1-22-08: Personal Space

Scenario: Like most people, let's say you work in a co-ed environment and you are regularly in communication with both men and women at your workplace. Does the opposite sex tend to shy away from you? Do they back up when you approach them? Do you feel like you intimidate them? what is the rapport like between you and your co-workers?

Solution: It might just be how you are handling 'Personal Space'. How do men and women react to each other's own personal space? It is important to recognize that personal space between women is the smallest. Personal space between men however is a much larger space. The acceptable personal space between a man and a woman would be somewhere in the middle. Overall, women tend to keep less space between themselves and other people and they are more likely to take a step back if they feel that their personal space is being invaded. Pay attention to the amount of personal space you give to those around you.

*Does the same apply for married couples?

Ladies - did you know... there was a fascinating study done of married couples. The husbands were asked to walk towards their wives and to stop at what they thought was the best possible conversational distance. The more satisfied the husband was with his marital relationship, the closer he walked to his wife and the smaller the distance he left between them.
