3-04-08: Shaking Hands Across a Table or Desk
Tonya Reiman
Printer-Friendly Format

Scenario: Let's say you sit behind a desk or that you are in a conference room and someone comes in and you decide to shake hands... what do you do? what is the appropriate way to shake hands? Should you lean across the desk? Is that good use of your body language? Well that depends.. do you want to build rapport?

Solution: I cannot tell you how many times I have seen someone trying to lean across a desk or conference table just to lose balance and practically fall over the table to try and shake someone's hand. It is very awkward, clumsy and difficult to do not to mention a very ineffective way to build rapport. Why not take the time to walk around the conference table or come out from behind the desk to shake their hand? It is a much better way of making a great impression and building rapport with that person. Go out of your way to use your body language to show the other person that they matter. It will show in your actions and will go a very long way.
