Self Touching Adapters
Tonya Reiman
Scenario: You are talking to someone and they are unconsciously touching themselves. Solution: Self touching displays which are also referred to as self adapters, usually indicate some level of anxiety. For example, we might hug ourselves (fold our arms across the chest) when we are feeling nervous or intimidated. We might bite our nails, touch our face, rub our arms or legs. If you find someone is touching themselves more than they usually do, question what the context of the conversation is to glean some insight as to why they might need more security. Just so you know, women tend to self touch much more than men.... I mean really much more than men. This often comes across as insecurity which is why I always instruct women when going on job interviews to keep their hands in check.
