Herman Cain on Libya - body language
Tonya Reiman
Printer-Friendly Format

Watch Cain as he answers the question -- first, he touches his tie, looks all the way with his eyes closed (as if he is trying to shut out potential distractions) and then adjusts his jacket. Listen to the heavy breathiness of his voice as he says "ok, Libya", it is as if he is taking a school exam and needs to remember. His face starts to twitch (which is normal for him, he stretches his lips in disappointment, blinks excessively (again, part of his baseline is that, at times, he blinks excessively. However, here we note an increase even in the excess), he moves the water bottle which is something that people do when they become nervous-as if touching the water bottle will help him remember something and put him in "control" of himself. He blinks, darts his tongue out and looks up again. His fingers are twitching at this point (note, we see NO dominant thumb here as is usual for him). He makes a determination and then rolls his lips inward -- he in unsure of his answer and waves it off. Readjusts his tie AGAIN and then moves his chair randomly as if he needs to "adjust his position" of what he has said. Now at 1:06 watch how he completely CLOSES up, his crosses his legs, closes his jacket and puts his hands into a clasped position. All the while making little eye contact. Finally, he makes his excuse "all this stuff twirling around in my head". We don't often see Cain off his game -- this is a first. As bad as Rick Perry? No…. but interesting nonetheless.
